Goal-setting for real {busy} people

I don’t know about you, but once in a while I get a hankering to do EVERYTHING better. Better cooking, better exercising, better studying, better socializing, better cleaning, better sleeping, better eating. It’s enough to send me running for donuts and Netflix!

Experts say it takes 21 days to form a habit, and I’ve found that in many areas of my own life that proves true.

 Where I run into trouble is thinking I can set ten new habits in place at once.

In my own life, I find that healthy habits support and sustain one another, and that setting ONE new practice in place is often enough to set off a domino effect of wellness in my life. As an example, I might say, “start every day with a green smoothie this month.” (I really wouldn’t say this, as I’m not quite that healthy yet 😉) By next month, I’ll be craving salads and feeling energetic enough to take a hike or do a bit of exercise. On the other hand, a goal like, “eat green smoothies, salads, and steamed veggies every day, and hike every day, and hit the gym five days a week” is much more likely to fall apart by day three. True story.

Next time I want to do EVERYTHING better, I’m going to do ONE thing better . . . for ONE month. It’ll get me started, and I know from experience that it will be just the beginning of good things to come. The ONE thing I am focusing on currently is eating more balanced meals.
